Magnesium Oxide for Fertilizer

Fertilizer-grade magnesium oxide is obtained from natural magnesite sources and is produced through a process called caustic calcination. This product is developed for the specific purpose of manufacturing fertilizers, providing nutrition to plants, and amending soil. The special 1.6-5.0 mm grade of magnesium oxide, containing low-release magnesium, is available in various grain sizes, making it an excellent choice for improving soils with low levels of magnesium.

Magnesium Oxide for Animal Feed and Health

Magnesium is an essential nutrient for all animals, and low magnesium intake can lead to several negative consequences, including:

  • Hypomagnesaemia or grass tetany, which can cause symptoms such as staggering, muscle trembling, rapid breathing, loss of appetite, and even death if not immediately addressed.
  • Skeletal deformity and retarded growth in young animals that consume magnesium-deficient milk during lactation.
  • Minimization of milk production, – Buffers: which can be prevented by using MgO as a weak base to neutralize excess acids in the digestive system of dairy cows, stabilizing the pH value in the ideal range of 6.2 – 6.8, and increasing milk production.

To prevent magnesium deficiency, particularly in lactating and grazing cattle and sheep, it is crucial to include additional magnesium in their daily feed. There are several ways that animals can absorb magnesium, including:

  • Compound feeds – premixes that mix magnesium with other minerals and trace elements
  • Spreading powdered MgO over the fields during grazing periods
  • Providing licking blocks containing magnesium
  • Adding MgO to the drinking water.

Description and advantages

The product is a white, self-flowing magnesium oxide derived from pure natural magnesite, specially chosen for this purpose.

The product undergoes strict control during beneficiation, calcination, and sizing processes according to ISO standards to ensure consistent quality, high and uniform biological availability, and very low levels of contaminants.

The product is available in different size distributions to meet the specific needs of feed production methods, making it suitable for use in the animal feed industry.

Magnesium Oxide for Industrial applications

Magnesium oxide is a versatile product that finds numerous industrial applications. Some of the key uses of magnesium oxide for industrial purposes are:

I. Refractory:

  • Magnesium oxide is a high-purity caustic calcined product that has controlled reactivity (low, medium, high, and very high, i.e. SSA from 10m2 /g up to 100m2 /g) and LOI. It is characterized by high whiteness, low SO3, low acid insoluble, low heavy metals, and low iron content
  • It is used for a variety of industrial/technical and special chemical applications such as the production of magnesium compounds, catalysts, and catalyst supports for the petrochemical industry, as a polymer additive, and in high-tech ceramic formulations.
  • It is also used in hydrometallurgy (precipitation process) as well as in the production of high-quality fused magnesia (brick-making grade), sintered, or fused alumina magnesia spinels.

Magnesium oxide is employed as a refractory material in making crucibles, which are containers meant to be exposed to extremely high temperatures to heat the contents inside. Crucibles must be made of substances that maintain their properties at high heat and are not affected by it. Magnesium oxide is one such substance and is therefore utilized for this purpose. The product is offered in granular form or milled as per the customers’ needs.

II. Insulator

Magnesium oxide powder is an effective insulator due to its heat-resistant properties. It is derived from natural sources of magnesium carbonate (MgCO3) and calcined in a shaft kiln to produce a caustic calcined magnesia product. This product is used in the construction sector for magnesia floors and in various industrial, technical, and environmental applications. It can also be utilized during the production of toughened/tempered float glass. The LOI (loss on ignition) and activity of the magnesium oxide powder can be adjusted to meet the specific requirements of customers.

It is commonly used as the mineral component in mineral-insulated copper-clad cables, which are industrial cables designed to protect critical electrical circuits during a fire, including fire protection devices such as alarms and smoke control systems.

The powder is available in granular form or milled according to customer needs.

Magnesium Oxide for Dietary Supplement

Magnesium is a vital nutrient for all living organisms and plays a crucial role in maintaining good health in humans. The lack of magnesium in the body can result in various health problems, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart arrhythmias, osteoporosis, muscle spasm, and other functional and biochemical issues. Therefore, it is necessary to provide the human body with an adequate supply of magnesium through daily diet or supplements. Magnesium oxide supplements are available in the form of pills or included in multivitamins.
